The Quadra 3^®, with 96 DSV pipettor head, is designed for precision liquid handling from 20µL down to less than 1µL with disposable tips. At the 20µL level the CV is 1 to 2%. At the 1µL level the CV is less than 5%. This is accomplished with Tomtec's patented piston blow through design. Each of the 96 pipettor pistons has a center hole connected via silicone elastomeric tubing through a motorized pinch clamp to an air pressure reservoir. When the clamp closes the pinch tubes, the 96 pistons act as air displacement pipettors. When the pinch clamp is open, pressurized air (1 to 5 psi) blows through each piston and tip orifice. This air flow expels the small slug of reagent that remains in the tip orifice due to capillary action.

The 96 DSV head may also be used for non-contact dispensing. A small aliquot of reagent (i.e. 1µL) may be aspirated in the tip orifice. When positioned over the receiving well, the pinch clamp is opened blowing the tip contents into the well, in a non-contact mode. A precision pressure regulator controls the delivery force to prevent splashing. The air pressure is derived from the Quadra 3^® internal compressor.

The tip racks for the 96 DSV infeed and outfeed via the stackers in the same manner as microplates. The tip racks may be intermixed with microplates adding program flexibility to the system. The ability of the stackers to sort, or move tips and plates between stackers, add additional functionality. Combination of up to 50 microplates and tip racks may infeed and outfeed from both sets of stackers. The indexing stage of the Quadra 3^®, lets the DSV head handle both 96 and 384 well formats interchangeably.

The DSV head retains the tips with an O-ring seal. They may be shucked and reloaded a number of times, contributing to economy of operation. The Quadra 3^® ultrasonic tip washing system extends this economy.
